Product Description

The Last of Us is a third-person Survival-Action game and PlayStation 3 exclusive featuring a unique character action driven storyline focused on the unlikely pairing of a young girl and a hardened scavenger in a post-apocalyptic gameworld. The game utilizes multiple gameplay mechanics, including "Dynamic Stealth," allowing differing possible strategies and techniques in conflicts, resulting in different possible outcomes. Additional game features include AI that adapts to choices and situations, a variety of enemies, a live inventory system, and beautiful graphics. Story 20 years after a pandemic has radically changed known civilization, infected humans run wild and survivors are killing each other for food, weapons - whatever they can get their hands on. Joel, a violent survivor, is hired to smuggle a 14 year-old girl, Ellie, out of an oppressive military quarantine zone, but what starts as a small job soon transforms into a brutal journey across the U.S. Gameplay The Last of Us is a third-person Survival-Action game that utilizes choices in gameplay action to develop the game storyline, as well as the relationship between the two main characters, Joel and Ellie. The game features a combination of combat, exploration, stealth and platforming game mechanics. Although Joel and Ellie are both residents of a post-apocalyptic world, they have had different experiences that affect the way they see the world around them, and feel about what they see and do. Joel had a life before the pandemic, while the world of the pandemic is all that Ellie has ever known. As part of Joel's job to smuggle Ellie out of the quarantine zone, players have to make choices in how they deal with enemies, which include, roving gangs of human scavengers not unlike themselves, military elements and infected civilians. Player also have opportunity to together interact with elements of the world around them, which helps to build the bond between Joel and Ellie. Resources in the game are scarce, making overwhelming use of firepower unlikely and unwise in conflicts, and resource gathering missions. In addition, most other residents of the ruined world that are encountered are just trying to survive - blurring the line between good guys and bad guys. Finally, game AI react differently depending on the specifics of the player's actions, making choice in gameplay a major consideration. It's good, not great
After the insanely good scores this game was getting I was expecting a hell of a lot from it and what I got instead was just a game that I felt was "ok". I kept waiting for it to turn into this amazing game that everyone is making it out to be but honestly the gameplay is nothing I haven't seen before. The melee combat is the best aspect, it's brutal and frantic and worked really well. Everything else like the stealth, sneaking around, throwing objects to lure enemies, climbing around and occasional shoot outs all work fine but are nothing I haven't seen done before and in better games. The story was overall done well thanks to some great voice work and the opening section was definitely a grabber. There's multiplayer but i'm tired of multiplayer in games and didn't even care to try it. It's definitely worth a try because some people seem to love it, for me I was expecting much more than what I got.

Naughty Dog's "The Last of Us" is one of those games that is best characterized as a must-have, system defining exclusive. If you have a PS3, you should own this game. If you don't have a PS3, you should be buying one for this game. It is simply that dang good.

This game uses the graphics engine Naughty Dog perfected with their Uncharted series. This means at no point will you be let down when it comes to amazing scenery and visuals while you play. The Last of Us (TLoU for now on in this review) is some of the best graphically that you will ever see on a current-gen console. The lighting, "god rays," colors, and details are consistently top-notch in the single player story.

The sound and music are fantastic. The music sets the mood brilliantly, guns sound powerful, infected sound frightening and instill the sense of dread, and the voice acting is so believable it is nearly uncanny. You WILL ultimately find yourself caring for these characters.

Other reviewers have posted mild spoilers regarding the first 15-ish minutes of the game, and their reactions are spot-on. It is a powerful intro that makes you feel a plethora of emotion. Ultimately giving you the perfect insight into Joel, the grizzled character you control. It will easily remain as one of those gaming moments I will always remember.

Thankfully the game doesn't let you down after that amazing opening act. From that point on, the tension roller coaster peaks and falls until you finally just have to take a break to gather your senses. It is exhilarating for a game to make you feel so much from a story.

The combat in this game is initially cumbersome, but you quickly adapt to it. It is similar to Uncharted, but feels a bit more clumsy, possibly to make it less arcadey. Ultimately though, you may learn sometimes the best course of action is to sneak by the threat rather than engage. Honestly I had never cared much for stealth games (I run and gun in nearly everything I play,) but I find myself taking some form of stealth option or route most of the time unless it looks like there is no better recourse. Don't get me wrong, once you have the hang of fighting in this game, combat is A LOT of fun also. It is just with the limited bullets and durability of your melee weapons, it makes stealth the smarter choice in most scenarios. Tip of advice, don't waste too many shivs on killing!

The crafting is a fun way of managing your resources, and encourages searching every nook and cranny of this beautiful post-apocalyptic world Naughty Dog created. I actually found myself getting frustrated at opening cabinets or lockers and not finding some sort of goodie (not like in Bioshock, where you'll find something every few feet. But scavenging in TLoU is obviously the more realistic scenario.)

A downside is the game does suffer from some long loading times when you initially start it up, but there is no problem after that for the remainder of your play-through. It is hardly enough to dock any stars for. There was a day-1 bug regarding the autosave, but that has since been fixed. I still manually save at random points just to be on the safe side (like if I do something stupid and want to revert to an old save to avoid it.)

This game does continue the Naughty Dog tradition of long, beautiful cutscenes in between spurts of gameplay. You will be watching as much as you are playing. I find this makes the story more fulfilling (and gives you that moment to catch your breath,) but be forewarned if this is something that may bother you.

I bought this game specifically for the single player, and at $60, it was completely worth it. There is a multiplayer facet of the TLoU, but I haven't tried it yet. I played the story on Hard, but at non-crescendo events that still felt a bit on the easy side. I will update my review after I have given the multiplayer a fair chance.

**** MULTIPLAYER UPDATE ****

The multiplayer of TLoU is, at its core, a flavor of Team Deathmatch. There is a respawn mode ("Supply Raid") and a single-life-per-round mode ("Survivors".) Even though it is "only" team deathmatch, it is really well done and quite fun to play. It doesn't feel like a cheesy slap-on gamemode like many developers throw into their single player games to help milk out DLC. It requires a great deal of strategy and skill. The team with teamwork and cooperation will win, if you "lone-wolf" you will die, and your team will more than likely suffer a lost round if you are playing for yourself. It utilizes many of the great features found in the singleplayer, such as item crafting, scavenging, and stealth.

Multiplayer has a meta-game where the better or worse you do affects your personal camp of survivors. As you play better in the TDM gametypes, the number of survivors in your camp grows. You keep them healthy by collecting dropped supplies in the matches from kills and by other means. That said, if you don't play well your camp of survivors begins to die off. It doesn't do anything to change your match gameplay, it is just a good motivator which drives you to try to play better (and makes you work toward corresponding trophies dealing with the number of survivors you have at Day 40.)

When you first start the multiplayer, you join one of the two warring factions and stay as that faction until after the 40 day time frame (40 matches - each match is a day) or you kill off all your camp survivors from incompetency. After that you can then choose to play as the other faction if you wish. The factions are both equal in abilities, their difference is just visual.

The game utilizes "boosters and upgrades" similar to the Uncharted series. You don't need to use them to be competitive in matches, but they do help out. They consist of such abilities as faster healing, less rifle sway, and knowing when you are spotted by the enemy.

All in all, you should own this game. Do what it takes, and get The Last of Us... you wont regret it.

I never write Amazon reviews for products but I felt I should take the time to write a brief one for this amazing game. It will probably be similar to just about everyone else's positive reviews because this game is really THAT GOOD. Here is a list of pros and cons for the game:

PROS:

- STORY: The story is absolutely amazing and is very emotional from start to finish. I felt like my heart was racing with anxiety the entire time and although it was stressful at times, I loved it. Naughty Dog does it once again with great storytelling. The dialogue exchanges between Ellie and Joel are funny, realistic, and entertaining.

- GRAPHICS: The graphics are by far the best I have seen on the PS3. Despite the age of the hardware, this game looks almost as good as some of my PC games on maximum settings. It's amazing how ND can continue to improve on the look of their games this late into the console cycle.

- SOUND: Voice acting is another strength of ND. Just like Uncharted, the entire voice cast is excellent and top-notch. The sounds of the environment are also realistic and the soundtrack that accompanies the gameplay moments is exciting and spot-on.

- GAMEPLAY (Singleplayer): Better than Uncharted. As much as I love the Uncharted series, I agree with many people that the gameplay can get pretty stale after a while, even before the end of the first playthrough, The Last of Us gameplay is thrilling from beginning to end. I played on the hardest difficulty during my first playthrough and found it challenging, yet not too frustrating. The gunplay is awesome and the lack of ammo always made me nervous when I encountered a lot of baddies at once. I enjoy stealth tactics so I enjoyed strategizing over how to quietly take out or move by enemies. The ability to create different weapons on the fly and choose different ways to approach situations really made this gameplay shine in my opinion. The enemy AI was also pretty challenging, but like most games, could always be a bit smarter. Not really a problem though. The singleplayer took me about 18 hours which I think is pretty good for someone who did a decent amount of exploring as well.

**GLITCHES: Most games have bugs throughout and can sometimes damage the gameplay experience. I am forgiving for some glitches as development times for games are always under constant pressure, This game, like the Uncharted games, has hardly any noticeable bugs. I am really struggling to think of some as I write this, which is a good thing and I want to give ND props for this.

CONS:

- MULTIPLAYER: I know the diehard Last of US and Uncharted fans will most likely disagree with me on this one. First of all, I think the game is outstanding and doesn't need multiplayer because the singleplayer is so good. However, if a multiplayer is going to be added, it should be pretty good and near the same level of fun as the singleplayer. I feel Naughty Dog doesn't do a very good job with their multiplayer portions in their games. This multiplayer, in my opinion, is pretty boring. I gave it about 10-15 hours of play time, which I think is enough to come to a conclusion. There are only two modes to play at the moment, Supply Raid and Survivors(?), and play similar. The objective in both modes is to defeat the other team in a certain amount of time (deathmatch style). In Supply Raid, there are 20 respawns for each team while Survivors has no respawn and is roundplay (best of seven? - sometimes there are ties at 3 a piece so it is kind of confusing). Each match is 4 v 4 and players can craft weapons like singleplayer and can purchase ammo/weapons with scavenged parts. The main goal for each player is to help their team win by collecting parts, keeping their teamates alive, and building up their clans between matches for 12 weeks. The story for your clan whether it be Fireflies or Hunters is boring and I honestly did not feel any desire to play multiplayer to just keep imaginary clan members alive. What I also didn't like in multiplayer was the downing. It takes a lot of ammo(which is already scarce in MP as well) to down a guy and then as he bleeds out, you have to waste more ammo to finish him off or melee him through a never ending animation that typically gets players killed while doing it. The gameplay is slow and tactical, particularly Survivors mode, which I like, but there is nothing really to keep me interested in playing. Also, I feel like in Survivors mode a HUD should not be allowed in order to increase the tension in the match. Players work well together though I must admit, so that is refreshing to see in multiplayer competition. As for me, I will stick to the faster paced Ghost Recon Future Soldier (PS3) and Battlefield 3 (PC) for my multiplayer fix.

Hope this review was helpful and detailed enough for you to make a decision. I didn't intend for it to be so long. If you are into singleplayer games and third-person gameplay, this is a must buy. Check out multiplayer, but don't expect to be blown away by it.
