Elex Is The Biggest Trashfire I've Played All Year, But I Still Love It

Elex Is The Biggest Trashfire I've Played All Year, But I Still Love It

Elex is a terribly constructed video game full of glitches, lag, eye-sores, and confusing mechanics. I would not recommend most people go through the pain of playing this RPG. And yet, despite all of this, I am obsessed with Elex. I can’t stop playing it. In a year of incredible releases, Elex manages to be one of the best and worst.

Elex review

Billed as a science fantasy game, Elex is more like getting out every single toy in the drawer and playing with them at the same time. One figure is bigger than the other, one has a gun, another is a knight, another is a pirate. None of them quite fit together, and that means that sometimes the whole thing looks pretty odd, but for better or for worse we’re definitely using every single toy we’ve got. More an unapologetic genre mashup of post-apocalypse, fantasy, and sci-fi videogames than a straightforward science-fantasy game, Elex’s cobbled-together tropes and genres are an astonishingly apt metaphor for its cobbled-together systems and stories. After 54 hours with Elex, playing well into its endgame, I was still curious about its world and the things in it, but in the process I was so often frustrated with the actual play that I doubt I’ll go back for more.Individual animations are smooth, but they fit together very poorly, making action scenes look slo

ELEX Review – Red Headed Stepchild of RPGs

We have been spoiled a little as gamers in the last few years when it comes to RPGs. We have non-AAA developers putting out some of the well-crafted RPG experiences out there. Earlier this month we had the much vaunted Divinity II, to say nothing of Witcher 3, which still holds up two years on. […]

Gothic and Risen dev's post-apocalyptic RPG Elex is out now

Gothic and Risen dev's post-apocalyptic RPG Elex is out now

Elex is really covering a lot of bases. Sci-fi, fantasy, open-world, moral choices, jetpacks—sounds like a bit of something for everyone. It’s the latest action RPG from Piranha Bytes, the Gothic and Risen lot, who typically make fun but rough around the edges RPGs. It’s out now. Here’s the skinny: the world of Magalan is a post-apocalyptic fusion of science and fantasy, where a war is being fought over a resource that gives people magical powers, but also turns them into arseholes. As well as battering folk, killing mutants and flitting around in your jetpack, you’ll also get to decide whether to take the compassionate route, or give into cold, indifferent logic. If you want a better look at it, here’s 12 minutes of the game from E3. Watch as a man tries to defeat a huge mech with nothing but a crappy axe.
